School-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS) is the application of evidence based strategies and systems to assist schools in decreasing problem behavior, increasing academic performance, increasing safety, and establishing positive school culture.
SW-PBIS is not a curriculum, intervention, or practice, but is a decision making framework that guides selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavior outcomes for all students.
SW-PBIS emphasizes four integrated elements:
- data for decision making
- measurable outcomes supported and evaluated by data
- practices with evidence that these outcomes are achievable
- systems that efficiently and effectively support implementation of these practices
SW-PBIS refers to a systems change process for an entire school or district. The underlying theme is teaching behavioral expectations in the same manner as any core curriculum subject.
SW-PBIS provides a framework for the use of research-informed instructional principals and practices to teach and reinforce behavioral expectations using a three tiered model. This framework provides a natural pathway for schools to provide intensive or targeted interventions to students who do not respond to primary prevention strategies.
